What separates the best from the rest are staying power, overall prices (including shipping fees), sales and selection. Amazon appears to have the edge in all categories.
Amazon consistently runs its “Big DVD Sale” with a variety of quality movies priced as low as $6.97. Its list of movies at this price includes more than 200 titles, including The Bridges of Madison County, The Island of Dr. Moreau, Lethal Weapon 2 and 3, Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome and The Pelican Brief.
For one dollar more on Amazon, consumers can purchase any of the Lord of the Rings or the Matrix movies.
Amazon also features free shipping for any orders over $25 on specially designated DVDs. So a customer can buy the Batman Begins two-disc special edition for nearly 40 percent off the retail value at $17.97 and the Wedding Crashers unrated full-screen addition for $15.98 (45 percent savings) and not have to worry about shipping costs.
Online store Overstock.com features discounted DVD’s including some used videos for as low as $5 but its list of titles is not as impressive as Amazon’s collection. The quality of movies, especially at the discounted rate, does not match those of Amazon.
Home electronics retailer Best Buy understands the customer is turning to the Internet to buy cheap DVDs, so it is battling Amazon with amazing savings values. Best Buy runs a “7.99 DVD Sale” on its Web site. Among the titles are the entire Matrix, Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter collection of movies, in addition to The Transporter and modern classics such as A Few Good Men and Stand by Me.
Best Buy, however, charges shipping as does Overstock.com for all its merchandise no matter how much the customer spends. Amazon has the edge in that regard over Best Buy and other Web sites that are devoted only to DVD sales, such as Digitaleyes and DVD Empire.
DeepdiscountDVD does not have an extensive list of titles but it serves the gift-giver well with classic movies with no shipping costs. For example, the Star Wars trilogy sells for only $45.38 (a 35 percent savings off the listed price of $69.95) and the buyer can get it shipped free.
DVD Empire’s prices are not much of a savings – Madagascar costs $21 while at Amazon it is $15.98 – and you must buy three DVDs to have free shipping. Digitaleyes also has Madagascar priced at $21 and it always charges shipping fees.
The hardcore DVD collector might want to try to find a bargain on eBay, or select five DVDs for 49 cents each with free shipping at Columbia House. Strings are attached, however, with Columbia House. The membership agreement calls for five additional DVDs to be purchased, all at full retail price, some as expensive as $45 each and a shipping fee is involved.
As you can see that even though there are several positives and negatives to each of the online dvd stores, there is definitely an advantage of price in any of them over retail, AND you don’t have to wait in line or scrounge through the unorganized discount bin.
